I never copy or prepare a solo, Marc.
Have any suggestions on songs to play? Sometimes I feel like I'm repeating the playlist too much

bonne prestation!
Je pense que le morceau de be bop enseigné par Lionel à Charlieu t'aurais plu et surtout apporté beaucoup dans la précision. Tu peux jeter un oeil sur les vidéos.

Hi jan,
this is my method:
I search for all the possible angles for playing the song. (on E9 or C6)
I Improvise all the way at first.
But at some time i come up with good idea's and kept this idea in my memory.
At this point i try to play the song always the same.
If i have a studio job, i like to be prepared and hate improvising.
If i play covers (like country) i would like to play my own version of the song. But i discovered that i can not improve the song by doin better playing like the steelplayer on the record. Most of the time the steelplayer on the record is very good.
So i can do 2 things: I don't mind and play my version of the song or i can copycat the steelplayer version on the song.
Sometimes i cannot copycat because the version of the steelplayer is so good and difficult that i have to rely on my own version LOL
Some solo's especially in the country are standard.
Like the solo on Blue bayou. I once played my own version and played something totally different like Dan Dugmore. I get responce of people in the audience that say: "hey man you were totally wrong on the solo"? well -- - ???
So on this song i am not improvising, and played like the steeler on the record :-)
On jazz songs i like to improvise from time to time; but it's not always easy.
Keep on steelin' Jan. I like your playing anyway - it's great.

Thanks Marc for sharing your thoughts, and the nice comment.
I understand what you say. And one thing you said; that some solo's, especially in country, people really want to hear the exact same or otherwise they're not satisfied; well that's one of the things that made me decide never to be part of such a scene. The element of freshness - I just can't live without (on stage). Probably also the reason that I'll never "going to make it".
As far as studio work goes: i agree - that's no time to experiment.

ps now studying S Wonder's "Sir Duke"
ps2 only talking english here to let other read along - de groetjes hee
